HOME LEARNING
Home Learning Policy
At Selly Park Girls' School, we recognise that effective home learning plays an important role in raising standards as such is should be set on a regular basis. We also acknowledge that Homework covers a broad spectrum of learning activities. We actively encourage diversity in the setting of home learning tasks, but at the same time, we acknowledge that effective homework, no matter how creative, shares some or all of the key features listed below:-
- Clarity in terms of what is being assessed and how;
- Integration with the lesson topic and/or extension of the topic;
- The opportunity to practise and embed skills;
- Manageability in terms of levels of challenge and time given to complete the tasks;
- Effective use of differentiation;
- Appropriate feedback: electronic, written, oral;
- Marking of extended written tasks support the school’s Literacy Policy;
- Development of lifelong learning skills especially the ability to learn independently;
- The efficient organisation of the giving in/collection of home learning;
The importance of ICT in developing home learning that is engaging caters for a range of learning styles and enhances independent learning;
One further shared feature of effective home learning is the involvement of parents. This can come in a range of forms but all research shows that home learning is an excellent mechanism for developing parental involvement and where parents do play a part in homework the learning outcomes are better.
- Parental Involvement in home learning can include:-
- Checking the planner/ diary;
- Listening as youngsters explain what they need to do – helping them to prioritise homework;
- Testing and helping with revision activities;
- Completing tasks that involve joint learning;
- General encouragement;
- Providing a quiet zone and equipment;
