FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS

FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS

1. Is it scary on your first day?
Naturally, whatever school you go to, you will feel scared, anxious or worried about your first day. This is because you are entering a new surrounding with new people. Don’t worry, you will not be the only person feeling like this and after day one you will feel a lot more confident. If you still feel worried and want to talk to someone at school then we have many people who love to listen...and talk! Your Form Tutor, Miss Stott (HOY 7), our Pastoral Team (https://sellyparkgirls.org/pastoral-support) and in general any teacher within our school, because that is what we are all there for – to help and support you.

2. Can I bring my phone to school?
It is strongly recommended that you do not bring mobile phones on the school premises. If your parents/carers want you to bring a mobile phone to school for safety reasons, the following rules must be adhered to:
 • Mobile phones should be password protected;
 • Mobile phones should be kept in zipped/closed pocket of the school bag and turned off;
 • Mobile phones should not be visible within the school gates;
 • If a mobile phone must be used it should be outside the school gates and well away from the school gates.
Failure to adhere to these school rules will result in your mobile phone being confiscated for 24 hours. Parents or other family members (aged 18 or above) will have to collect the phone 24 hours after the phone was confiscated or the next school day and you will receive an after school detention on a Friday. Phones should not be used at all during the school day which includes no photographs or videos to be taken. If any photographs or videos are taken the punishment will be determined by the Senior Leadership Team or the Head Teacher.

3. What do I do if I am late to school?
You should be on the school site by 8:40am. You should be lined up outside your form room when the music plays by 8:45am. If you arrive after 8:45am, the school gates will be closed and you should enter via reception as you will be deemed ‘late’.
If you do arrive late via reception from 8:45- 9:15 then you will go through to the LDC (Learning Development Centre) where Mrs McManus/ Mrs Kennedy (Attendance Secretary) will ask why you are late, record the reason and register you. You will serve a 20 minute SLT (Senior Leadership Team) detention at lunchtime on the same day in the detention room which is next door to the canteen.

4. What do I need to bring to school?
You will need your school planner with your timetable and a pencil case to keep a pencil, pen, rubber and ruler in. Your teachers will provide you with scissors, glue and colouring pens if they are needed, but you can bring your own if you like.

5. What food does the canteen serve?
There is lots of food to choose from at break and lunch times. We have two canteens at Selly Park which offer a differing selection of both hot and cold food; examples include sandwiches, baguettes, chicken pasta bake and roast dinner. You can also bring a packed lunch if you like. At Selly Park we operate Cashless Catering so when you get to the till you do not use ‘cash’ to buy your lunch but instead a biometric print which is linked to your own unique account.

6. What should I do if I lose something?
Firstly, re-trace your steps and check in the recent places you have been. Ask your form tutor if anyone has handed it to them. Check with our site management team who keep hold of all the lost property, they can be contacted from Reception. If you still can’t find it tell your form tutor and our Reception staff. It is really important to label everything you bring to school with your name. That way, if you do misplace something, it will get back to you quicker.

7. Can I wear jewellery?
In the interest of health and safety, jewellery is discouraged. However, if you wish, you may wear a watch, a plain ring or a pair of small stud earrings. You should not have any other piercings or jewellery on in school. Jewellery will have to be removed during P.E lessons.

8. Will I get lost?
On your first day, we will give you a map of the school and you will be given tasks to help you familiarise yourself with the layout. It is quite normal to get a little lost in a new surrounding, so don't panic. Just ask anyone you see and someone will help you get to the right place.

9. Can you go home for lunch?
No. You must stay on the school premises at break and lunch time.

10. Will I make friends?
Yes. We have a real community feel at Selly Park Girls’ School. We also have a ‘big sister, little sister’ programme in place whereby should you feel you need to you can be buddied up with another pupil in order to get to know them and others. If you find it difficult to make friends once starting Year 7 please speak to your form tutor or our pastoral team who will be able to support you.

11. What is the school uniform and where can we get it from?
You must wear a smart, sensible navy blue uniform. This compromises of a navy blue skirt worn with a blue shirt style blouse, school blazer and a navy blue school sweatshirt. You may wear navy blue trousers (no denim or chino material) under their school skirt. Shoes should be black or navy blue in colour and for reasons of safety should be flat. Trainers, pumps and canvas shoes are not allowed. If headscarves are worn they must be plain navy blue without any tassels or braid.
Selly Park Blazers & Jumpers are to be purchased from Mansuri online from www.mansuri.co.uk or instore at the Mansuri uniform shop on the Stratford Road, B11 4BP.
