Intent

The Computing department is dedicated to providing a broad, balanced and aspirational curriculum with a strong focus on programming, IT and digital media.  Students make outstanding progress thanks to inspirational teaching which prepares students for their next stage- the world of tomorrow. In Computing, 65% of students will work in jobs that don’t yet exist within programming, engineering, STEM and robotics. The spiral curriculum is key in broadening the horizons of students delivering cultural capital by revisiting Alan Turing and the code breakers of Bletchley to making websites and using coding for exciting project work. Students develop character virtues such as curiosity  and key skills such as critical thinking, problem-solving and logic and leave the subject ready for exciting careers at the forefront of new technologies and new ways of thinking prepared for life as digital citizens who are ready to play an active role in the digital world that surrounds them.


The Business department is dedicated to providing a broad, balanced and aspirational spiral curriculum founded on exciting teaching approaches which link to the real world. Business is a live subject with key concepts and ideas often in the news offering a plethora of cultural capital opportunities with a focus on real business links, put simply it is a subject where the boardroom meets the classroom.  Students make outstanding progress thanks to inspirational teaching which prepares students for exciting careers in Finance, Marketing and enterprise. Students develop character virtues such as curiosity  and develop key skills such as decision making, problem-solving and analysis and evaluation skills who are empowered to become commercially minded and enterprising individuals.


Curriculum

Key Stage 3 Computing


All pupils study Computing for 1 hour a week developing more advanced skills and greater depth of understanding as they move through the key stage.


Year 7

  • Introduction to ICT and school network including BGFL and email - Creating an interactive quiz
  • E–safety understanding a range of ways to use technology safely, respectfully, responsibly and securely
  • Go Green - Using a range of different applications to produce a variety of documents for a given target audience about Go Green -Environmental issues are harmful effects of human activity on the biophysical environment.
  • Basic spreadsheets collecting, analysing and presenting data and information. Introduction to functions and formatting including filters.


Year 8

  • Hour of Code- Introduction to Programming introduction to algorithms, Sequencing, Conditions and pseudocode.
  •  Advanced programming with Scratch h to solve a computational problems. Advance tools and interface, using variables, loops and count controlled iteration.
  • Basic Computational thinking and binary - Basic computational thinking , Alan Turing and Bletchley. Binary addition and conversion binary and decimal
  • Intermediate spreadsheets Collecting, analysing and presenting data and information formatting including advanced filters, charts, conditional formatting and Macros
  • ICT Creative Project –Website Development  analysing websites and application focus with students creating websites. Purpose of websites, planning, client brief, target audience. Extensive display of Dreamweaver & Fireworks skills for a 4 page website. apply HTML page structure and coding incorporate basic coding tags 

Year 9

  • Introduction to Year 9 Options via combined Business and IMedia Taster Focus.
  • Business - How businesses operate, and key topics such as marketing and finance –
  • Imedia - Digital media task for a comic - Planning tools for digital and manipulating graphical images.

  • Programming using Python using 2 or more programming languages (textual focus) to solve computational problems and develop modular programs.

  • Database Project Introduction to structure and database - Fundamentals of databases, record, fields, field types. Use of data structures for lists, forms, reports and tables. Collecting, analysing, filtering and presenting data.
  • ICT Creative Project- Comic Life Multi-Application Project R084 CyberSafety Comic combining skills from digital media – Editing and manipulating Images using Photoshop and Fireworks tools


Key Stage 4 ICT and Business


At key stage 4 all students are given the opportunity study either ICT or Business.


Level 1/2 Certificate in Creative Imedia or GCSE Business. Given the opportunity to study either ICT via the Cambridge Students in Year 10 are as below
 

Cambridge Level 1/2 Certificate in Creative Imedia


Cambridge Nationals in Creative iMedia are media sector-focused, including film, television, web development, gaming and animation, and have IT at their heart. They provide knowledge in a number of key areas in this field from pre-production skills to digital animation and have a motivating, hands-on approach to both teaching and learning.


Cambridge Nationals deliver skills across the whole range of learning styles and abilities, effectively engaging and inspiring all students to achieve great things.


Course Structure

Eduqas GCSE Business


The WJEC Eduqas GCSE in Business introduces learners to the business world, empowering them too develop as commercially minded and enterprising individuals. Learners will have the opportunity to develop a wide range of skills, enabling them to use business information critically, to develop arguments, to make justified decisions and to prepare them for further study and career pathways.

Resources

All the resources for Computing and ICT at key stage 3 and 4 are available to pupils online via the school intranet and the VLE.


Homework

Homework is set across both key stages to stretch and consolidate learning. This enables students to prepare for future lessons or cement knowledge or understanding from previous lessons.


Extra-curricular Activities

Support and catch-up sessions are available on Thursdays after school from 3:15p.m.4:00p.m.
